The Railway Crossing Cottage is a well-known landmark in the village. Possibly the busiest time of the year for foot-traffic is on Boxing Day when it is clearly a tradition for many local families to walk down to Baits Bite Lock and back to aid post-Christmas digestion. Sadly, the existence of the Gatehouse is now under threat.
The main house is sound but the flat-roofed add-on containing the kitchen and bathroom is rapidly falling apart. This coincides with a decision by Network Rail (NR) to sell off it’s general housing stock. Unless there is pressure from elsewhere it may well suit NR to simply flatten the entire building and currently that possibility is looking more and more likely.
