Anyone wanting to stand as a district councillor for Milton is being urged by South Cambridgeshire District Council to come forward as one of our two seats becomes vacant this time around as Cllr Hazel Sminth comes to the end of her term. Nominations open on Wednesday (1st April) with potential councillors being asked to pick up a nomination pack from South Cambridgeshire District Council.
Elections will be held for a third of the seats on the District Council on Thursday, 7th May at the same time as the General Election (and, in theory, any parish council election here in Milton).
Anyone who is over 18 years-old and registered to vote in South Cambridgeshire, or has lived, worked or owned property in the district for at least 12 months can generally stand for election.
District Councillors are elected to serve for four years at a time and candidates can stand as part of a political party or as an independent candidate. Nominations must also be supported by ten people from within the ward in which a candidate is seeking election.
To stand for a political party the candidate must speak to the party direct.
Completed nomination forms must be returned to South Cambridgeshire District Council’s elections team by 4pm on Thursday, 9th April. Nominations received after this date and time cannot be accepted.
Jean Hunter, South Cambridgeshire District Council chief executive, said:
Serving your community as an MP, district or parish councillor is extremely rewarding. If you want to take part in democracy at any level from Parish to Parliament, you can make a real difference to people’s lives, so think about picking up a nomination pack.
