Council bosses are calling on people to nominate their village heroes who deserve recognition for ‘amazing’ voluntary work they carry out in communities.
Nominations for South Cambridgeshire District Council‘s fifth annual Community awards are now open with five gongs up for grabs.
The awards celebrate the achievements of local people who have made a significant and voluntary contribution to their area over the last 12 months.
The five award categories are:
- Village Hero – recognising outstanding individuals
- Parish Councillor of the Year – recognising parish councillors who have made a significant contribution over the past year
- Youth Group or Initiative – celebrating local youth groups and initiatives that provide positive activities for young people and encourage young people to play a part in their community
- Businesses Developing Talent – through apprenticeships and support for further education
- Local Services and Amenities – celebrating facilities such as community run shops, post offices, recreational facilities and libraries
The winner of the Village Hero award last time was Margaret Harrison of Ermine Street, Caxton. She has dedicated almost 30 years of her life to helping other people in her community by running a monthly drop in club at the local village hall as well as a voluntary medication delivery service.
This year’s nominations close on Friday, 16th January. Further details can be found here.
The awards ceremony will take place in March.
Cllr Mick Martin, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member responsible for our relationship with community groups, said:
We have some of the most amazing and dedicated volunteers in the area and these awards are a great way to give some recognition to these unsung heroes. Please take the time to put forward your nominations as people in villages across our area know first hand the hugely positive effect voluntary work has and it is always nice to have the chance to say thank you.
