All new Ready to Ride paddleboarding sessions are set to propel local interest in the sport for those looking to hone their skills. The new sessions, organised by South Cambridgeshire District Council in partnership with Cambridge Sport Lakes Trust, follow a wave of successful taster sessions earlier this summer.
The course builds on the skills and knowledge gained in the taster sessions and is suitable for those looking to take their skills to the next level. The course will teach participants more advanced paddleboard techniques, self rescue skills and how to manage in challenging conditions.
Successful participants will receive the British Stand Up Paddle Association (BSUPA) Level 1 award and be able to hire the equipment and go out and paddleboard independently.
The two hour course is led by a qualified instructor and aimed at people who have had a go at paddleboarding before. It costs just £30 per person and will take place at Milton Country Park at the following times:
- Saturday, 13th September – 9:30am to 11:30am and 1pm to 3pm
- Sunday, 21st September – 9:30am to 11:30am and 12:30pm to 2:30pm
- Sunday, 5th October – 9:30am to 11:30am and 12:30pm to 2:30pm
The fast-growing sport of stand up paddleboarding, which involves standing on a board and moving through the water using a long paddle, is good exercise for the whole body and easy to learn. The boards are lightweight but incredibly buoyant and stable. And since you’re standing at your full height, you’ll enjoy excellent views of everything from water life to what’s on the horizon.
Cllr Mick Martin, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for sport, said:
Paddleboarding is becoming an increasingly popular way of getting out and about on the water. Exploring Milton Country Park from the tranquility of the lake is a great experience, coupled with the many health benefits.
We hope that these courses, along with other activities in our Adult Try programme, will help get people inspired to try new sports.
