The Green Dragon bridge is closed for the next ten weeks or so while contractors grit blast the metal structure and repair the ironwork before the bridge is repainted with a specialist, long lasting paint finish – the British Racing Green colour scheme was chosen in consultation with the local community.
As a first stage, the bridge will be covered in scaffolding and a plastic protective covering to allow the repair/repainting work to be carried out. The bridge will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists who are advised to use the nearby Riverside Bridge via St. Andrews Road.
The current protective paint system has come to the end of its 20 year design life and areas of steelwork have corroded. The refurbishment is expected to take around 10 weeks to complete at a cost of £245,000.
