Another of Cambridgeshire Archaeology’s guided walks is happening near Milton. This time it’s a free guided walk in Waterbeach which will help uncover the secrets of Car Dyke which could eclipse Hadrian’s Wall as the largest Roman engineering works in the British Isles. It takes place on Wednesday (5/6) from 7pm.
This guided walk is one in a series of guided walks organised by Cambridgeshire Archaeology throughout the county and on all the archaeological monuments on the County Farms Estate.
Car Dyke is a Roman canal which once connected the River Cam to the River Great Ouse and the Fens. It is also thought that the Car Dyke may have run all the way to Peterborough and maybe even as far as Lincoln. Running for over 128km this would make it longer than Hadrian’s Wall and thus the largest Roman engineering works in the British Isles. The section of the Car Dyke at Waterbeach is part of the Cambridgeshire County Council’s Farms Estate.
Stephen Macaulay from Oxford Archaeology East said:
The Car Dyke, or indeed The Old Tillage as it’s known at Waterbeach, is one of the County’s most important ancient monuments, although perhaps maybe not the best known. Come along on the walk and find out for yourself its fascinating story.
The walk will start at 7pm on Wednesday from the entrance of the Recreation Ground off Car Dyke Road, Waterbeach. The walk is free and will last approximately one hour. There is no need to book in advance and most of the site is accessible for people with restricted mobility.
