Butt Lane Cycling Improvements

The county council have agreed a list of cycling improvements that could see around £7.2 million invested in Cambridge and surrounding villages over three years arising from Cambridge’s successful bid to become a national “Cycling Demonstration Town”.

The news for Milton is mixed. Item 22 on the list is:

22. Milton to Impington – Improvements for cyclists along Butt Lane

That sounds attractive but there is a danger to it as Milton is less than three miles from Impington Village College. Normally this would mean that pupils would not get a free bus service, being expected to cycle or walk to school instead, but because Butt Lane has always been deemed too dangerous they currently do. It was a hard fought battle to get that however.

That’s why your parish council has always opposed piecemeal improvements to the route which have only ever tackled the “easy” part by proposing putting in a cycle path in the de-restricted area when the biggest danger area is where the road snakes up past the church in Impington with some tricky blind bends.

So if 22 does happen (it’s on their “Second Priority Programme
Reserve/Other Projects / Major Infrastructure projects” list so it’s near the bottom of the list) then we will all need to push to ensure they do a proper job for the whole route to IVC, otherwise we’ll just have all the parents
driving their children to school down Butt Lane every morning and the road will be even more dangerous than before.
