Nominations open for District council election

Anyone wanting to stand as a district councillor for Milton is being urged by South Cambridgeshire District Council to come forward as one of our two seats becomes vacant this time around as Cllr Mark Hersom comes to the end of his term. Nominations opened today (Monday, 14th April) with potential councillors being asked to pick up a nomination pack from South Cambridgeshire District Council.

Elections will be held for a third of the seats on the District Council on Thursday, 22nd May – 19 in total. The elections are three weeks later this year so polling day coincides with the European elections.

Anyone who is over 18 years-old and registered to vote in South Cambridgeshire, or has lived, worked or owned property in the district for at least 12 months can generally stand for election.

District Councillors are elected to serve for four years at a time and candidates can stand as part of a political party or as an independent candidate. Nominations must also be supported by ten people from within the ward in which a candidate is seeking election.

To stand for a political party the candidate must speak to the party direct.

Completed nomination forms must be returned to South Cambridgeshire District Council’s elections team by 4pm on Thursday, 24th April. Nominations received after this date and time cannot be accepted.

To vote in the elections you must be registered. If you have not completed a registration form please visit the Electoral Commission’s website – www.aboutmyvote.co.uk – to find out how to do so.

Jean Hunter, South Cambridgeshire District Council chief executive, said:

Councillors are ordinary people with jobs and families who simply want to make a difference in their area. One day you could be helping someone in your ward and the next you could be voting on an issue which has an impact on the whole district. It is a very rewarding role and if you want to make a difference please think about picking up a nomination pack.
