Guided Walk along Car Dyke

This Wednesday (27/5) Cambridgeshire Archaeology will be holding a guided walk just north of Milton at Car Dyke, Waterbeach.
Car Dyke is a Roman canal which once connected the River Cam to the River Great Ouse and the Fens. It is also thought that the Car Dyke may have run all the way to Peterborough and possibly even as far as Lincoln.

Running for over 128 kilometres this would have made it longer than Hadrian’s Wall and thus the largest Roman engineering works in the British Isles. The section of the Car Dyke at Waterbeach is part of the Cambridgeshire County Council Farms Estate.

The walk will start at 7pm on Wednesday, 27th May, from the recreation ground entrance off Car Dyke Road, Waterbeach. It is free and will take around an hour to complete. The site is accessible to people with restricted mobility and there is no need to book a place in advance.

The event is one of a series of guided walks organised by Cambridgeshire Archaeology throughout the county and on all of the archaeological monuments on the County Farms Estate. For further details contact Stephen Macaulay at Cambridgeshire Archaeology on (01223) 850500.
