Discover Cambridgeshire’s Hidden Archaeological Treasures

Sarah Poppy, Senior Archaeologist at Cambridgeshire County Council, will be at Landbeach on Saturday, March 15th, to show local societies and people around the County’s archaeology store.

Over the past 20 years there have been many archaeological excavations and the majority of the ancient artefacts uncovered are at the Landbeach Store, where the remains of the past 10,000 years of Cambridgeshire now reside.

Saturday is a chance to see the Stone Age axes, fine Roman pots or Saxon burial treasures.

Quinton Carroll, Head of the County Council’s Historic Environment Team, said: “There have been many exceptional archaeological discoveries found in Cambridgeshire in the past 20 years and this is a chance for people to see some of them.”

This event also ties in with National Science and Engineering week which runs from March 7th-16th.

Anyone who wants to join the tour, should contact Anne Solly (01223) 718133 or Sarah Poppy (01223) 717312) to make an appointment. The tours are free but places are limited.

The village of Landbeach has a rich heritage stretching back as far as the Iron Age, excavations have revealed important remains on County Farm land to the east of the village. In addition, the remains of the medieval village are still visible at Worts Meadow pocket park.
